SIEU Cougars Win First Dual
INDIANAPOLIS - A.J. Smith won three matches Sunday as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville finished with a 1-2 dual record at the Greyhound Duals.
SIUE defeated Campbellsville 21-20 for its first dual victory of the season. The Cougars were defeated by Findlay 41-3 and Indianapolis 30-12.
Smith was SIUE's only winner in the match against Findlay. The Cougar 197-pounder dispatched Daniel Stevenson 7-2.
The Cougars and Campbellsville both won five matches, but SIUE used a major decision by Smith over Diante Wright and a technical fall by Steve Ross at 157 pounds to gain the edge. Tim Mahoney also had his hand raised for a forfeit at 174 pounds.
David Devine also collected a forfeit against Indianapolis. SIUE won two matches on the mat with wins by Lenny Kuspa over Nick Smith 5-2 at 165 pounds and Smith over J.T. Jenkins 5-3.
The Cougars will now prepare for the NWCA Conference Championships to be held in Allendale, Mich., on Feb. 27. The top wrestlers at that meet advance to the NWCA National Championships in March at Hampton, Va.
